October 30th 2009 - Our moviestar

As we have said before Linda and Carina (Alicia's Mor mor) have been taking a communication course. We have seen a lot of improvement in the way we communicate with Alicia and the way she responds. One of the things that we all work on is trying to get Alicia to know what is coming next. For instance, when we pick her up we say, "Up," or "Upp," and hold her hands and arms in the up position. This teaches her on many different levels. First it lets her know what we are planning on doing, "we are going to pick you up." Then it teaches her what the word "Up" means, "Up means to be picked up from the floor or out of the bed etc." Finally it helps her communicate with us by her being able to tell us when she wants to go up, If she wants to be picked up she should hold her arms up. So far it is working really well. When we say up she gets her hands and body in the ready to be lifted position. In the video here besides listening to Alicia's beautiful laugh, you can see that I will say to Alicia, "Do you want to go back?" Then Alicia will shoot backwards. It is a game that she loves to play. She knows what is coming next, so she can anticipate what to do. It is a lot of routines. In the video I am only moving my arms back after she starts going backwards so she does not fall. This ís all basic communication and we love it!

Here is our little princess laughing her adorable laugh.

This is a fantastic way of learning! As you say the word "back", Alicia deciphers the meaning and starts moving backward. She is able to anticipate what is coming up next. If you think about it, that's a great way for learning. The educator, John Dewey, was always for "learning by doing". First, Alicia hears the word, then figures out what it means and finally executes the desired result.

You are great parents and are commended for your dedication to each other and to Alicia and Junior. Alicia is becoming more beautiful every day.

    We love you.
