June 7th 2009 - Little Koala

Just a little update on how things are going with Alicia. There is not so much to tell really. Linda and I have really learned a lot about patience through our many doctors visits. A lot of things concerning Alicia are usually wait and see. Whether we are waiting to get an appointment with a doctor, waiting for a result of a test, waiting for a medicine concentration level to hit the right level, waiting to see if a medicine will work, waiting to get a call from a doctor, and of course waiting in waiting rooms. So basically right now no big changes, just wait and see.
We have become pretty good at passing time while we wait out our waits. During our hospital visits we often pass the time watching DVD's on our computer, looking at the internet (Linda hooked our laptop up with wireless keeping the hospital stays in mind), we play monster games of cards mostly dame de pick, 3 to 13 and sometimes rummy, and of course talk.
It has been pretty nice that we have been able to sneak out for little food breaks this weekend. It was funny, on Friday one doctor said that we could go out for a little while and the other one said she would rather us stay in. It was kind of like playing one parent against the other. I obviously decided that I liked the first doctors advice more than the second doctors, so Alicia and I went for a little stroll down to get some eats. Today Linda, Alicia and myself walked through the park, and then met up with Maria and ate at a place called Bakfickan, which has the best burgers in town. Alicia has been really tired from the medicine and everything else she is going through. When we were out it was great to see a tiny period of her being mostly awake, smiling and laughing. Maria got Alicia laughing by tickling her; it only lasted 5 minutes, but it made our day.
As I said before, Alicia has been very tired. For maybe three days before this she has been tired and restless. She would wiggle and squirm, but not be able to find the right position to sleep in and would wake up after only a couple of minutes. It is cozy now to be able to hold the little princess and have her snuggle so comfortably into our arms and chests. There is no sense in tryng to keep her entertained, play with her or train her anything new, because Alicia is so tired and just wants to sleep. Instead she is like a little koala cub, asleep 23 hours a day right in her mommy's and daddy's arms. She loves laying with her face in our chest and her arms around us just like a koala cub. Even the way her little fingers grab hold of our fingers is koala like. Eventhough there is so much chaos going on with everything when we hold Alicia things feel so perfect. I guess it is kind of like being in the eye of a storm.
We appreciate all of the thoughts, prayers and kind words that so many people have expressed to us over this time.

Ross, you paint such a beautiful picture, I can see you walking around the park and laughing with Maria! Your describtion of waiting in the waiting room should be posted in every waiting room. Thank you for keeping us informed. I loved our phone call yesterday. Yes, it is hard to plan the future when the present is so chaotic! But, you are in the process of mastering patience!!! Yesterday was MeMere's 90th birthday. We talked to Joan and she said Mom had a birthday party with most of the residents in the big dining area. She was loving all of the attention! Must close for now, I'm at work.
    Love,
    Mom
